Thinking of maybe heading over that way next weekend, depending on if the USFS has FR701 back open by then. I'm not making a loop of this one, more of less just going in at the north, and coming out on Moore run in the south, as I think McGowen Mtn road is now open for the winter? I have a person to shuttle my truck, so no issue. I hear stories of really bad nettles on this trail, just wondering if I really should avoid it in the summertime?? I'll probably throw on some pants since I know there are nettles, more so than when I hike Horton last month in shorts ... I have about 2-3 other hikes planned before winter rolls in, but my schedule is full as heck in October already, let alone try to find a weekend to go hiking! two of those hikes are Pase Point in Blackwater falls, and Johns Camp Run on Cheat Mtn, up to the Allegheny tr. I try to do those when the leaves are changing...

jnk,
I did Turkey Run Tr. as part of a loop hike in Otter Creek on Sept 5, 2008 and the nettles were the worst I've seen anywhere on the Mon. The first portion of Turkey Run Tr from the McGowan Mt. Rd trailhead is an old woods road. The first mile of that was literally covered in stinging nettles. We had to put the legs on our zip leg pants and hold our arms up since the nettles were armpit high - I'm 6'1". I wouldn’t venture in there till after a hard frost. I don't know where you plan on coming out but I would go in via Moore Run Tr. (I think you have to go a short distance on McGowan Mt. Tr. first - don't quote me) and use it instead.
Pase Point in Blackwater is nice but pretty easy. Johns Camp Run - do you hike up from the railtrail or in from Gaudineer?

Thanks veal. Yeah I'm not fooling with armpit high nettles, hell with that! Knee high ok, but not that high! I was planning in going in from fernow, and coming out Moore run and out to McGowamtn rd.
Yeah I know pase is easy, but it's a good view. John's camp I go in from gaudeneer and go all the way to end of road and go right and it ends at the trailhead. I hike up to shelter and hang a left and hike a few miles up on Allegheny trail. Good views up there when leaves change.

If you want to do Otter creek you could go in Mylius trail and turn right onto Shaver’s Mt trail, down possession Camp Trail up Otter creek and back up Mylius . Might be a little longer than you were looking for.

Might be a little longer than you were looking for. I've done all that minus the east end up mylius, and your right that would be a slog for a day hike. I'll flip through my hiking guide and find something for next weekend. I'm running out of stuff close by to do though.

I made the mistake of hiking the Turkey Run trail this past May, in shorts. I didn't know about the nettles at that time. They were already thigh high and thick enough to completely cover up the odd fallen tree trunk, which I would invariably thwack my shins on. I was scratched up well and good. Oh yeah, it was in the middle of an unexpectedly heavy downpour. And a lost dog appeared out of nowhere and followed me the entire length of the trail, making me nervous that I would now have to be responsible for it at the coming crossing of Otter Creek. That was a miserable stretch on so many levels.
