Forecast this week looks dry, so that means Canaan Mtn again next weekend Plans this time out, I think will park at Lindy Point trail head (because I waxed the truck don't wanna get it dirty yet going up CLR from Canaan Hgts) Hike down to Lindy Run trail, to Plantation tr, over to RR grade trail, and back CLR to the truck, an estimate of just over 6mi. If I get really into it, I can extend my hike on further south to CLR south, and take it over to RR grade, and hike it the full length. Though this option would be near 10mi. I have seen where the signs have been removed from the Lindy Run trail head on the north side, how hard is the trail to find there? Also, any spots on this route that might be confusing or tricky to navigate?

jnk,
You knew I would respond again didn't you? In Nov 2015 I did a hike from the southern end of Lindy Run Trail the entire way across to the northern side, went west on CLR and then took Railroad Grade trail back across and then the CLR back to our start. Not exactly sure what you mean by your second option but here is what I have from my notes. The northern end of the Railroad Grade trail was not marked when we hiked it. We actually went past it on the CLR to a stream crossing and realized we were too far and went back. RR grade is a nice trail and easy to hike. The intersection of RR grade and plantation trail coming from RR grade on the north side was a bit confusing. Lindy Run Trail may not be marked on the northern end, I don't remember since we came in from the other side but it shouldn't be hard to find. Lindy Run Trail is a bit steep in spots but nothing too bad. If you could outline your second option a bit better I could possibly comment some more. If you do end up at the northern trailhead to RR grade be sure to find the overlook just across the CLR from it. It's very nice.

Okay, on second reading I think your extended option is my loop in reverse with a little tail out to Lindy Point. Is that correct? If so, you'll be slightly over 10 miles. If you do that there is a trail shelter on the southern half of RR grade trail near a little stream crossing. Nice place for a break or lunch. The southern half of RR grade trail is much drier but the entire trail is an old RR grade (hence the name) and just a nice walk.

To clarify, I'm coming in from the north, from the SP, and parking at Lindy Point TH. Gonna walk down CLR to the north end of Lindy run trail, and hike it south. I can either go all the way to CLR south side, and make the full 10mi loop, or cut off at plantation and make it a 6mi loop, coming back on RR grade trail, to CLR north, and back to Lindy Pt.
Got it? Lol
I may just swing the 10mi hike, as doing Lindy Run first would get the hardest climbing done first, and the the CLR south portion is downhill, and the gentler RR grade trail back to CLR north.
You say there is a overlook across from the exit of the RR grade trail on CLR north? I'll have to find it.

jnk,
Got it. Do check out the overlook - it's a nice one. You can see the Olson tower from there

Got a good t storm here south of Elkins last night, looks like maybe one rolled through davis too, but forecast looks all dry through Sunday, so should be GTG for saturday.
BTW vdeal, you happen to know which side of the creek Lindy run trail goes in from the north? Topo shows west side another shows east? Need to check hiking guide next....

jnk,
The trailhead is on the west side of Lindy Run and the trail crosses Lindy Run upstream a bit. Some nice rock formations along the lower part of the trail. If the water is up a bit you'll have to cross it on the CLR. Enjoy your hike.

Hit the trail at about 9am, couple cars at the tiny Lindy Point parking area. Lindy Run crossing was a rock hop on the lower side with help of the treck poles... Lindy Run trail was pretty easy to find up over the bank, there is a small cairn, and orange ribbon tied to some limbs. First bit of the trail was dense with laurel, and overgrown, but then you pop out into a good trail up by the rock wall... Trail was decent, slight uphill with a few climbs thrown in the whole way, some mud, not bad at all. Steep climb just before the plantation intersection. south end of Lindy was good, mostly washed and rocky, damp, but not bad, popped out on the road and started the long boring walk.... Hit RR grade trail which was a nice decent walk on the south side, to the shelter for a 15min break... after the junction with the plantation, RR grade trail gets a bit rougher, a few blow downs, mud, and such across the mucky top of the mtn, this section is still marked with blue plastic diamonds so it may be under USFS maintnace still??... Out onto the 4wd part of the loop road, and found the nice camping spot with the good view..... Then a couple miles back to the truck, at the lindy point trailhead which had since become a zoo since I had left that morning, easily 10 cars along the road and herds of people coming in and out of the trail. I changed my shoes and socks and got outta there, I don't like crowds, tourists at that! Total hike of 9.91mi by GPS, trail forks app said 10.05mi.

jnk,
Looks just like it did a few years ago albeit I went in November. Glad you found the overlook. Looking forward to your next hike. July and August and usually off months for me hiking - usually too hot and buggy.
