Pyramid Mountain Natural Historic Area
Saturday January 21, 2018
This past Saturday I headed north to the North Jersey Highlands, and the Pyramid Mountain Natural Historic Area for a short 4.2 mile loop hike.
The Pyramid Mountain NHA Park is located just north of Boonton New Jersey along Boonton Avenue (NJ Route 511). The park consist of 1,535 acres of open space divided into two portions of parkland, separated by Boonton Avenue. Pyramid Mountain trail system is on the west side of the road, while the Turkey Mountain trail system is on the east side of the road. There are over thirty miles of marked trails in the park
Pyramid Mountain Park is known for Tripod Rock. A 160 ton glacial erratic balanced atop three smaller boulders. And Bear Rock, being one of the largest glacial erratic’s in the State of New Jersey.
Began my hike at the visitor center parking area on west side of Boonton Avenue. And did a loop using the Blue trail, Yellow trail up Pyramid Mountain, Blue trail and white trails past Tripod Rock, Red/Silver trail past Eagle Cliff and Whale Head Rock, then steeply down a rocky hillside to the Blue trail and Bear Rock, White trail, Red trail with a steep rocky climb up the northwest shoulder od Pyramid Mountain and then back out the Blue trail to the parking area.
Some interesting displays to look at in the visitor center. Along with a map board of suggested hikes. Great little park for hiking in north Jersey if one ever finds themselves in the area. Definitely plan to head back when I’m in the area again to hike the trails on the Turkey Mountain side as there is a very scenic wet weather waterfall (Spring time or after heavy rains) on the that side of the park that cascades over ledges.
