I've got to say that I hardly ever use a GPS like that. I might put in a few waypoints but I'm an old school map and compass guy. I'll have the maps, compass, maptool and the GPS is for backup. Learn to take bearings, front and back, use handrail, offshoot, etc., and the need for the GPS is minimal. I have however started carrying a GPS Datalogger that logs location every second. Makes for interesting data when I get home.

Dunk ...
Been playing with my GPS here. Even though I can view the entire track in the gpx file in Garmin Base Camp and TOPO! when it gets loaded to the unite it draws straight lines from waypoint to waypoint.

yes she's a Brittany. The second one i've had I love those dogs. I'll check the route thing on my gps tonight. As far as the route up to Haystack I do come out in the little field below the knob itself.

My unit never shows my the tracks I import as a gpx. They are there if I go to edit the track I can select it in the track manager screen and it then will show up on the map screen. I must have a setting turned off or something but I've learned to use the waypoints as a check or when I need to find water or a campsite. Any ideas why I can't view the tracks from the gpx files. I have other map overlays that show tracks fine just not the one I create? If the gpx file has a track you have to turn it on in "Track Manager". If it's a route use "Route Planner".

Is there no way to have the tracks come on as a default? I have to select each track and turn it on. I'd rather they all be on. I ussually keep my tracks short so its easier to figure up milage if I won't to use different segments of tracks. so one trail will actually be broken down into multiple segments and its a pain to find each one individually to turn it on

I don't think so. You have to plan your route/track in advance, connecting the desired segments to get the hike you want to do before you load the file into your unit, maybe have some cut-off tracks/routes that you would still have to activate if you decided to use them. When we do the base camp/canyon Rim I usually load up the South Prong Tr to camp, the Day Hike Loop and the (God forbid we should ever need it) Tee-Pee Tr.

MR, You have learned the lesson of Tee Pee finally. Check your email for a Haystack file.

MR have you ever tried to make a map overlay that has all your trails and waypoints loaded in as a map that can be turned on and off as a set. similar to the different topo maps you can load onto the unit. seems like there should be a way to do that.
Vdeal I've hiked every official and unofficial trail in and around roaring plains. including the pipeline from the south overlook to the north end by the tower, I've even bushwaked up to Mount Porte Crayon. All that being said there is one "trail" up there I haven't hiked yet. you get one guess.

You mean all 3,000+ miles covering all 4 states? That would be a monumental task for sure.

Dunkard, That's a hard one but by your quotes I'm guessing this is a trick question. Oh, let me by brash and say ah, maybe Tee-Pee.

Dunkard, BTW, do you have Mary Ann's map? I got most of her's but have yet to find the full Roaring Plains one. I think she has hiked trails that most don't even know exist. I met Chip Chase (of Whitegrass) up there on Columbus Day as we came out and he came out from another direction. He had a copy of her map. I might have to contact him - really nice guy by the way.

MR I didn't know if there was a way to make a map overlay or not I've tried a few different ways but was never successful. I plan on heading to Upper Shavers and bushwacking to a couple peaks up there I'll post a TR when I get back. vdeal I'm Not familiar with Mary Anns map? most of my origanl maps I got of the area came from Jessups and MR's maps. I also found some GPX files off of www.gpshikingdc.com/index.html and some off of the Northeast ohio backpacking club (i think that was it). I started Geocaching a few years ago and that took me to a lot of different places up at roaring plains. Theres a cache east of the tower/pipeline along the north rim, one at pancake rocks between fr70 and the western part of the south prong trail and another one at an overlook off the hidden passage before seneca meadows. I never would have found those places if not for geocaching. I believe theres also a trail linking the tower with the roaring plains trail near the spruce campsite I haven't tried to find that one yet. and the TEEPEE i've yet to hike that one but I will one day, I can never pull myself away from the canyon rim trail it seems a shame to leave it early and miss what it has to offer

He knows his stuff. I "think" a lot of the GPS data on the NEOH site concerning WV came from ..... shoot .... I forget his name. We never met but always shared information. We both lead hikes for the WVHC for a while. I have faith in his data as well.

Dunkard, guess I was right. Oh, and from your reply there are at least two other trails you haven't done up there. Yeah, I know those sites for the maps but Mary Ann's probably is more complete than any out there. She lives in the area and has literally hiked every trail, pseudo trail, deer path, old tram grade etc. As for TeePee, don't bother. Now there are other trails up there that will rival anything you've been on. Yes, I'm being purposely vague for various reasons.

Hate to interrupt, but I have a quick question-has anyone been to Haystack Knob lately?

I did, over the weekend and could not find a trail up from the railroad grade to the knob, or nearby meadow. I found what I took to be a cairn near some fence posts maybe 100 yards past past the water shown on the GPS, could that have been the start? I didn't see a trail, maybe the newly fallen leaves covered it?

There is no real trail up from the railroad grade to the meadow. or at least I've never been on it. I always just bushwack up thru the forest, It's all pretty open thru there. I have the meadow marked on my gps and just head in that general direction.
