Harriman State Park, New York
As I had Friday off for the Thanksgiving holiday. Decided I needed to head off to hike somewhere I have not been for a while. And ended up on doing a loop hike in Harriman State Park in the Sloatsburg NY area.
Harriman State Park consist of 46,613 acres in area. And has over 200 miles of blazed trails to hike. My hike would only cover approximately 9 miles of those trails.
Parked at the circle at the end of Johnsontown Road just east of Sloartsburg NY. And did a loop consisting of the following trails: White Bar, Kakiat, Pine Meadow, Seven Hills, Tuxedo Mount Ivy and Blue Disk. A few things about hiking in Harriman park, One you will definitely want to have a trail map(NYNJTC maps or the Parks trail map), and secondly, with so many trails in some areas. One needs to pay close attention to which trail you are hiking on. Plus keep a close eye out for the trail junctions. Trail’s are blazed with various color and shapes blazes. (i.e. a white bar on black background for White Bar trail)
One of the first things I encountered was the bridge on the Kakiat trail, crossing Pine Meadow Brook was missing. Had to head downstream for a bit. Till I found a downed tree allowing me to cross to the Pine Meadow trail on the opposite side of the wide brook.
