Since no one has posted a trip report in the external hikes section. I figured I would be the first.
On Sunday I decided to head up to New York and check out some fall colors. My destination was the Shawangunk Mountains. And the Mohonk Preserve. If one want's to hike on the Mohonk Preserve lands. One must pay a day use fee of $ 12.00 for hiking.
Parked at the Trapps parking area just off NY state route 44/55. And paid my access fee at the self-registration booth, as I arrived at 7:00 am. Parking lot had plenty of available spaces at the early hour. But by the time I finished my hike at 12:30 the lot full signs were up.
Did an approximately 12 mile loop using the following trails and carriage roads.
Trapps Road northwesterly (graded carriage path) then left onto Coxing trail to it’s junction with the Millbrook Mountain Trail. Northerly on the Millbrook Mountain trail to it’s end at the Lake Minnewaska Carriage Road (graded carriage path) Southwesterly on the Minnewaska Carriage Road to it’s junction with the Gertrude’s Nose Trail, Southwesterly then northeasterly along the 3.4 miles of the Gertrude’s Noise Trail (Highlight of the hike as usual) to it’s junction with the Millbrook Ridge Trail back to the Trapps Road.
The pictures basically follow the route showcasing a few of the highlights.
Fall colored ferns along the Coxing trail
Lake Minnewaska from the Minnewaska Carriage Road
Patterson’s Pellet (Large Glacial erratic) from Minnewska Carriage Road
Pictures from along the Gertrude’s Nose Trail
Along the Millbrook Ridge Trail
I did not take many pictures along the Millbrook Ridge Trail due to the angle of the sun off to the east. One could do most of this hike without paying the $ 12.00 Mohonk Preserve fee. As the only trails that are partially or fully on Mohonk Preserve lands area the Trapps Road, Coxing Trail, and the Millbrook Ridge Trail. But then again you would have to pay the entrance fee for the Minnewaska State Park. Unless one walks in from the Jenny Lane Parking area. Which would make for a very long hike if hitting the Gertrude’s Nose trail
