Been toying with the idea of a hammock for well over a year now. I think i'm ready to take to the air and leave the ground. The main things holding me back were my hiking companions (dog and wife). The dog is just to old to accomany me on future trips and the wife only ventures out once a year. So thats going to leave me truly solo for the majority of my trips next year. The main reason I'd like to go with the Hammock is the ease in finding a suitable place to make camp. I tend to get carried away and stay on trail longer than I should and I've found my self scrambling to find a camp site when I should have stopped an hour ago at the spot with the plush moss covered forest floor beside the lil gurgling brook. but I always can't wait to see whats coming up next.
What is everyones opinion on the eagles nest vs the hennessy line of hammocks I've seen the ENO up close a buddy took one on a trip. I'd like the idea of losing some pack weight with a hammock but is that really possible? seems like with the hammock a bug net and tarp plus all you ropes and binders you'd be pretty close to the weight of a lightweight backpacking tent. and then theres the early spring and late fall trips. a lot of people take an underquilt and a sleeping bag, seems like your adding a lot of weight there.
Finally what about Jacks R Better hammocks and quilts? anybody use any of there products? They have a lay flat hammock design not like the hennessy/ENO design. I'm really interested in there products but they are very pricy.
Any input is welcome
